A Dynamic Analysis of Food Demand Patterns in Urban China AgEcon
Liao, Hui; Chern, Wen S..
Previous researchers have encountered difficulties in rationalizing the extremely high expenditure elasticities estimated for grain demanded by urban Chinese households. The high grain expenditure elasticities, which usually translate into high income elasticities, are doubtful for making a long-term prediction of grain demand in China. Unlike most previous studies using only statistic models, this study employs a dynamic Almost Ideal Demand System (DAIDS) incorporating demographic variables to explore the impact of habit effects as well as demographic impacts on household level food demand pattern in urban China. Most dynamic elements and demographic variables are found significant. The theoretical demand properties cannot be rejected in the DAIDS model...

A Euro-Mediterranean deal in agro-food and fisheries trade: Long run impacts in Greece AgEcon
Kitou, Elisavet; Philippidis, George.
We employ a heavily modified ‘agricultural’ variant of the GTAP model and a realistic baseline scenario to assess the impact on the Greek economy from a hypothetical ‘hub and spoke’ and a ‘FTA’ EUMED agro-food and fisheries trade agreement. Long run estimates show that Greek agro-food and fisheries sectors are not seriously affected, where surprisingly, trade diversionary losses to Greece from the FTA scenario are minor given minimal south-south trade links between Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC). Further research shows that under complete CAP decoupling, notable additional welfare gains for MPC are realised, whilst Greece stands to lose approximately €300 million.

A expansão do Programa Bolsa Família e as implicações sobre consumo e preços de alimentos: o caso de Viçosa/MG AgEcon
Rodrigues, Cristiana Tristao; Gomes, Adriano Provezano; Dias, Roberto Serpa.

A FELDOLGOZOTT FUNKCIONÁLIS ÉLELMISZEREK FOGYASZTÓI SZEGMENTÁLÁSA ÉS MAGATARTÁSI JELLEMZŐI AgEcon
Lehota, Jozsef; Komaromi, Nandor.
A primer kutatásunk 1060 fős 15 év feletti országos reprezentatív mintára épült. Az adatbázist az eredeti változók alapján K-közép módszerrel klasztereztük. A hazai funkcionális élelmiszerfogyasztókat 5 szegmensbe soroltunk be, amelyeket összehasonlítottunk és jellemeztünk....

A fogyasztói magatartást befolyásoló tényezők szerepe az állati eredetű ökotermékek piacán AgEcon
Foldes, Fruzsina; Dome, Botond.
--------------------------- Data derived from the processing of econometric and...

A Game Theoretic Approach to Analyse Cooperation between Rural Households in Northern Nigeria AgEcon
Gerichhausen, M.; Berkhout, Ezra D.; Hamers, H.J.M; Manyong, Victor M..
To improve the livelihood of the poor in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) much attention has been paid to the development of new agricultural technologies. We hypothesize that farmers can also improve their livelihood through cooperation. Partial cooperation, in which knowledge is shared or bargaining power improved, is relatively common in SSA, while cooperation where all resources are fully shared, which we address, has rarely been investigated. An important pre-requisite to establish such cooperation, is the need for a fair division rule for the gains of the cooperation. This paper combines linear programming and cooperative game theory to model the effects of cooperation of (individual) households on income and farm plans. Linear programming establishes...

A Game Theoretic Approach to Organic Foods: An Analysis of Asymmetric Information and Policy AgEcon
McCluskey, Jill J..
Demand for healthy, safe, and environmentally friendly food products has been increasing. In response, producers are marketing organic and other quality-differentiated foods, sometimes claiming to have followed sound environmental and animal welfare practices. These products frequently have unobservable quality attributes. If the profitmaximizing producer is able to deceive the consumer with a false claim, then he or she will enjoy a higher price with lower production costs (compared to the full disclosure outcome). The analysis described in this paper shows that repeat-purchase relationships and third-party monitoring are required for high-quality credence goods to be available. Policy implications of this analysis for national organic food standards are...

A gender performance indicator for irrigation: Concepts, tools and applications AgEcon
van Koppen, Barbara.
Although gender issues are today a priority on the agendas of irrigation policy makers, interventionists, farm leaders and researchers, there is still a considerable gap between positive intentions and concrete action. An important but hitherto ignored reason for this is the lack of adequate generic concepts and tools that are policy-relevant and can accommodate the vast variation in irrigation contexts worldwide. The Gender Performance Indicator for Irrigation (GPII) aims to fill this gap. In any particular scheme, this tool diagnoses the gendered organization of farming and gender-based inclusion or exclusion in irrigation institutions. It informs irrigation agencies what they themselves can do for effective change-if necessary. The tool also identifies...

A Globally Flexible, Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System: An Application for Meat Demand in Taiwan AgEcon
Liu, Kang Ernest; Sun, Chia-Hung.
A new demand system, combining the quadratic almost ideal demand system and the Fourier expenditure system, is introduced. An application for meat consumption in Taiwan indicates that the new demand system fits the data well and that the restriction to the usual specifications, such as locally flexible functional form, linear Engel curve, and both, are rejected.

Szucs, Robert Sandor.
Afiatalkorúak célcsoportja a piac leginkább befolyásolható szegmensét jelenti. A HAZARD ANALYSIS OF CONSUMERS’ SWITCHING BEHAVIOUR IN GERMAN FOOD RETAILING FOR DAIRY PRODUCTS AgEcon
Olearius, Gotz; Roosen, Jutta; Drescher, Larissa S..
German food retailing is characterized by fierce competition among retail chains for consumer shopping. This paper considers the switching behaviour using data of white dairy product purchases. The empirical investigation uses a survival analysis approach, in particular hazard analysis. The results extend the knowledge of shopping behaviour by providing a new set of explaining variables and the importance of the first store, defined as store with the major share of household budget, becomes apparent. On average, households buy dairy products 42 times per year. Thereof 58 % are retail chain switches and in 41 % of all cases the households remain at the previously visited retail chain. Generally a low customer loyalty is visible in this investigation. It is...

A HEALTHY SCHOOL MEAL ENVIRONMENT: FOOD ASSISTANCE RESEARCH BRIEF AgEcon
Ralston, Katherine L.; Buzby, Jean C.; Guthrie, Joanne F..
A "healthy school meal environment" not only gives students opportunities to make healthy meal choices but also encourages them to do so. The extent to which a healthy school meal environment affects the success of USDA's school meals programs is currently a subject of debate. The policy strategies that can be used to encourage such an environment for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP)also are subjects of debate. Environmental factors considered to be important include: (1) the nutritional quality, variety, and acceptability of program meals; (2) meal scheduling; (3) nutrition education; and (4) sales of non-USDA ("competitive") foods. Other factors contributing to an overall healthy nutrition environment in...

A Hedonic Price Analysis for the New Zealand Wine Industry: Preliminary Results AgEcon
Bicknell, Kathryn; Friesen, Lana; MacDonald, Ian.
This paper presents preliminary results from a hedonic price analysis of premium wines in New Zealand over the vintages 1994 – 2003. Implicit prices are presented for a sensory quality rating, as well as wine variety and regional reputation. Results show that the price premium associated with Michael Cooper's five-star quality rating is highly significant and increasing in magnitude over the study period. Trends in regional and varietal preferences are also explored.

A Household Level Analysis of Food Expenditure Patterns in Urban China: 1995-2000 AgEcon
Aguero, Jorge M.; Gould, Brian W..
With China's admission into the WTO, there is the potential for dramatic increases in U.S. agricultural exports to China. As China's economy continues to develop, there is general consensus that there will be an associated change in the population's diet. Currently, dairy products account for a small proportion of total food consumed, but that has been increasing in importance over the last two decades. As Chinese markets become more open to U.S. food products, it is important that U.S. manufacturers and traders obtain a better understanding of the determinants of food expenditures in China. This paper addresses the question of how changes in household income may impact food demand in general and dairy products in particular.

A Latent-Variable Approach to Modelling Multiple and Resurgent Meat Scares in Italy AgEcon
Mazzocchi, Mario; Lobb, Alexandra E..
This paper aims to measure the time pattern of multiple and resurgent food scares and their direct and cross-product impacts on consumer response. The Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) is augmented by a flexible stochastic framework which has no need for additional explanatory variables such as a media index. Italian aggregate household data on meat demand is used to assess the time-varying impact of a resurgent BSE crisis (1996 and 2000) and the 1999 Dioxin crisis. The impact of the first BSE crisis on preferences seems to be reabsorbed after a few months. The second wave of the scare at the end of 2000 had a much stronger effect on preferences and the positive shift in chicken demand continued to persist after the onset of the crisis. Empirical results...

A Long Memory Conditional Variance Model for International Grain Markets AgEcon
Jin, Hyun Joung.
The study explores a long memory conditional volatility model on international grain markets, demonstrating importance of modeling both temporal effects of volatility and long memory process. This study adopts six different volatility models, nested in an ARMA(p,q)- FIGARCH(P,D,Q), to capture dependence of grain cash price volatility and compares the performance of the six models. It also visits a related question about non-normal behaviors of grain prices and adopts the student-t density intended to account for fat-tailed properties of the data. We find suitability of the FIGARCH type models under the student-t distribution and competitiveness of the parsimonious FIGARCH(1,d,0) for modeling long memory volatility.

Egyes rossz adottságú gazdaságok földjeiket átállítják ökológiai státuszra, a támogatás végett. A műve-lési ágak között nagyobb a gyep (rét, legelő, 53,6%) és alacsonyabb a szántó (26,4%) aránya.
